A nice walk to the lookout which you can see Swansea in the distance. Then went on to the WW11 Gun emplacement area. There are four different gun placement areas and one Command Post.

During World War II Newcastle was the ONLY place in Australia where:

1. Coastal guns fired on an enemy naval vessel.

2. All three military services operated from the same command building.

3. Had the largest mainland military establishment in Australia’s history.

4. Was the critical hub of Australia’s largest war materials production.

Directions

Turn onto Crescent Road from Rees Street. DO NOT FOLLOW CRESCENT ROAD AROUND TO THE LEFT. There is actually 3 parts to Crescent Road. 2 forks off to the left or keep straight. Just Keep straight and you will hit the National Park. It is only about 6-8 houses up the hill from where the road veers left. If you continue around to the other crescent road and end up on Watkins Road or a dead end you have gone too far and veered off the straight path. Google maps does NOT show the National Park where it is at the end of Crescent Road, on the straight route from Rees Street.

Alternatively, if coming from Watkins Road when you hit the T intersection turn left and the National park is just over the hill.
